big little lies season 2

Rumors are swirling of the potential of a second season of Big Little Lies, but I’m not so sure this is a good idea.

And this isn’t just people speculating; there is actually a strong chance this is going to happen.

ET reports that HBO’s programming director Casey Bloys stated that the network is in talks with Liane Moriarty (the book’s author) about potential storylines for the second season.

He said,

“Liane’s taking her crack at it and I think that it’s interesting. I don’t think there’s been a time when we’ve gone to the writer of the novel, the source material, to come up with like, ‘Do you see ongoing stories?’ I’ll be very curious to see what she comes up with that.”

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed both the novel and the series. I also love that this show featured strong female leads, and was based on a novel written by a woman. For these reasons, a part of me is thinking, yes more please.

But a larger part of me is hoping this won’t happen. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. Does anyone else get sick of the constant sequels and reboots that never live up to the original? Especially since BLL is based on a book, and ended with the book’s ending. They’d be making up an entirely new storyline.

There’s something to be said about books and shows/movies that don’t have a neatly wrapped up ending. It’s up to us as readers and viewers to draw our own conclusions about what happens next. Maybe we base it on the characters and how they developed over the course of the story. Perhaps you might base it on something more personal. But I have a special place in my heart for storylines that don’t necessarily have a clean, crisp ending.

A second season would kind of ruin that unique feeling. Let’s leave something to the imagination. Don’t tell me what happens. In a weird way, I think it would spoil the book and season one of the series, since you have this feeling in the back of your mind of how the story continues. Can’t we just leave this good thing be?

It does seem like the network is at least making sure that a real story is there before they proceed. Bloys explained, “we have to see the material and if it’s worth everybody’s time.”

Makes sense.

I am glad that if it does happen, it seems like Liane will be heavily involved as she was with the first season. If you are interested in the prospect of a second season, this is what Liane is cooking up in her head right now in terms of plot and characters:

“The obvious thing is, first of all, I think we could bring in more of Bonnie’s story from the book. And also what happens next for Celeste. That’s the question that’s also a really interesting thing, when you’ve been through a relationship like that, how do you feel now? How would she feel? She’s grieving. She’s still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there’s a whole lot of different storylines.”

I don’t know though, I’m still kind of hoping it doesn’t happen. Maybe these badass ladies could team up for an entirely different project. I’d be 100% behind that.
