Alec Baldwin’s Trump impression gives us a good laugh on Saturday nights before we remember it’s based on real events and go back to panicking about the state of the union.
But sadly, Baldwin’s days as Trump may end sooner than we thought.
Although his impersonation helped Saturday Night Live earn some of its highest ratings in years, the actor has good reasoning behind his choice.
In an interview with Mario Lopez on Extra, Baldwin revealed that the “maliciousness” behind Trump’s administration drives his decision.
“His policies aside, which you can hate, I thought he would have just relaxed….The maliciousness of this White House has people very worried… which is why I’m not going to do it much longer, the impersonation. I don’t know how much more people can take it.”
We can see where he is coming from. Although the portrayal allows for comic relief, Trump’s poor response and the reality of his attitudes and choices throughout his administration almost make the role upsetting in a certain way.
It will be interesting to see what direction the show takes with regards to Trump. It has always included politically-charged material. Will they respect Baldwin’s decision to no longer play the role? Will they focus on other people involved in Trump’s presidency? It is hard to tell, especially at a time when laughter is truly one of the best medicines.
We respect his decision to leave either way… now if only the real Trump would leave as well!
