Chrissy Metz is truly an inspiration.
If you didn’t think Metz, who is known for her role as Kate on the hit TV show This Is Us, was already an inspiration, her story will quickly convince you otherwise.
“There were nights my mom wouldn’t eat dinner. She’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m not hungry.’ I knew she was giving up food to make sure we could eat, but when you’re 9 or 10 years old, you can’t help. It was devastating. In retrospect I think that’s why food equals love in my family.”
The This is Us star says she used comedy as a coping mechanism and by chance ended up at a model and talent casting call with her sister. She sang “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera and the following day was told she’d be introduced to talent agents.
When finally in LA, Metz recalls taking all sorts of jobs over the years to make ends meet and living in friends’ houses for free until she could make enough money to pitch in.
“When I booked This Is Us, I had 81 cents in my bank account. I could cry right now just thinking about it.”
Despite all her hardship, she says it’s been worth it.
“I’ve had women—average women, older women, teenagers—who say to me, ‘Your role and this show has changed my life.’ That makes all the struggle, all the ramen noodles, all the times when I couldn’t pay my bills, all the times where I was like, ‘I can’t do this,’ worth it.”
