We have some rather upsetting news to report this morning. A football star at De La Salle High School (a nationally-known private all-boys Catholic school) has been officially found guilty of raping a young woman.
The victim reported the crime just days after the football player forced himself on her, both vaginally and orally.
The assaulter, who was 15 at the time of the crime, comes from a family of sexual predators. His father is a registered sex offender convicted of child molestation.
Neither the name of the victim or the assailant has been released since both are still minors.
The Deputy District Attorney took special care to commend the victim for her bravery and said,
“The victim is an amazing young lady. She is to be commended for her courage to come forward and seek justice, not only for herself but also on behalf of all victims of sexual assault.”
This situation is despicable and just further drives home the point that rape culture is real. Young men are influenced by their elders as to what is and is not acceptable sexual behavior. Rape is learned, not inherent.
The silver lining of this story is that the victim will be able to get some justice. The young man faces up to 10 years in prison and could be sentenced to juvenile hall until he’s 18 years old. The more we bring justice to survivors and show that we believe them and are on their sides, the more they may be willing to come forward and tell their story.
