Eva Mendes is one of the most confident and empowered female celebrities of our generation. Although, in a recent interview Eva admitted that she wasn’t always so proud of her Cuban upbringing.

Growing Up

In a recent chat wth Latina magazine, the actress discusses why she used to be embarrassed of her heritage.

“When I was younger, and me and my mom would go to the mall, she would be speaking in Spanish, and I’d be embarrassed. I was 12 or 13 years old at that time, and all I wanted to do was fit in. Anything that made me different, I didn’t want to embrace.”

But with age, she says that she has learned to truly love her culture. And we’re so glad she has!

“I’m just so proud of my whole culture, of where I come from. I wish I’d had that insight when I was 13. I fought it for a while, for sure.”

Nowadays

Eva says that now more than ever it’s important for her to pass on her Latina pride to her two daughters.

“We’re constantly playing Cuban music. I speak to them in Spanish, and my mom speaks to Esmeralda in Spanish. Well, now she speaks to both of them in Spanish. Any time I have an opportunity to introduce her or them—I have to say “them” now, though my newborn just sleeps all the time—to my culture, whether it’s through music, or through food, I do. That is a main priority, for sure. ”

The actress is currently taking a break from her career to raise her two daughters Esmeralda and Amada. She’s made a point of keeping her privately life out of the public eye. Although, that’s a bit difficult considering her boyfriend and baby daddy is Ryan Gosling.

While Eva says that she’s truly loving live as a stay-at-home mom at the moment, she did admit that if a truly special project came along she would be willing to go back to work.

Here’s to hoping an amazing script comes on her desk. We can’t help but miss her on the big screen!
