“The sea was angry that day, my friends – like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.”
Breaking news: in a Reddit AMA, Jerry Seinfeld just admitted that he is responsible for that scene in the Seinfeld episode “The Marine Biologist.”
For those of you who don’t know quite what we’re referring to (who are you people?), let us explain.
“The Marine Biologist” revolves around two central plots: George pretending to be a marine biologist so he can woo a girl, and Kramer hitting golf balls at the beach. But turns out those two plots weren’t originally connected, at least not at first.
Jerry wrote on Reddit:
I think the best Seinfeld episode idea I ever contributed was that George pretending to be a marine biologist would find Kramer’s golf ball in the blowhole of the whale. Believe it or not, we were doing both of those stories without seeing any connection that Kramer was gonna hit golf balls at the beach, and George was gonna be pretending to be a marine biologist. And it was in the middle of the week that it suddenly hit me of a way to connect the two stories.
Amazing!!! If there was ever any doubt that Jerry was a genius (there wasn’t), then this would surely prove it. Perhaps one of the top five most memorable scenes from Seinfeld is George’s monologue, which ends with him pulling out Kramer’s golf ball from his jacket pocket.
So thank you, Jerry. Thank you for your wonderful contribution to our lives.
