Pope Francis has now decreed that all priests can absolve any woman of an abortion.
In an apostolic letter released by the Vatican on Monday, the Pope said that while abortion is still a sin, it can now be forgiven. He explains,
“I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father. … I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion.”
This comes in opposition to the previous measures, in which an abortion meant excommunication from the Church, which only a Bishop could absolve.
Pope Francis’ decision comes in stark opposition to President-elect Trump’s vow to overturn Roe v. Wade and make abortion illegal in the United States again.
