It’s official: the third Psych movie is a go!
On May 13, 2021, Peacock confirmed that Psych 3: This is Gus has officially been green-lit.
The movie is coming out soon so let’s go over everything we know so far before the new Psych movie drops on NBC’s streaming service Peacock.
What’s Psych 3 About?
According to the press release, Psych 3 kicks off right where Psych 2: Lassie Come Home left off. The description is as follows:
“In preparation for a shotgun wedding before the birth of Baby Guster, Shawn and ‘Groomzilla’ Gus go rogue in an attempt to track down Selene’s estranged husband, as Lassiter grapples with the future of his career.”
When Does Psych 3 Come Out?
At New York Comic Con in October 2021, Peacock confirmed that the movie would premiere on the streaming service on November 18, 2021. They also dropped the highly-anticipated trailer (see above), much to fans’ delight.
Who’s Confirmed to Appear in Psych 3?
James Roday Rodriguez and Dulé Hill are obviously returning as well as co-stars Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen. Dulé’s real-life wife, Jazmyn Simon, who plays Gus’ soon-to-be bride Selene, is also set to return.
Based on the trailer, we also know that Curt Smith will make another cameo (as himself, obviously).
What Has the Cast Said Previously About Psych 3?
Before Psych 3 was ever confirmed, the cast and crew were already thinking about the franchise’s future.
After Psych 2: Lassie Come Home dropped in 2020, series creator Steve Franks said,
“The burden [Gus] carries in his life is keeping Shawn in check and [Shawn] dragging him into all these terrible things. So thinking about Gus trying to continue his life, a balancing act, now having to also have the family and the wife and the child, and potentially a dangerous [friend] to contend with, it’s too rich. It’s too much fun and such a fun way to go out.”
Who Will Play Selene’s Husband?
Psych 2 ended with Gus discovering that Selene has a husband she never officially got divorced from. It was a playful nod to the season 2 episode “There’s Something About Mira,” in which Shawn discovered Gus was secretly married.
As for who will play Selene’s mysterious husband, Steve previously said,
“I really love the idea of, oh my gosh, who’s her husband? Who can we cast? And that became James [Roday Rodriguez]’s and my favorite game on the set [of Psych 2].”
In June 2021, it was officially announced that Allen Maldonado will play Selene’s hubbie. You’ve previously seen Allen as Honey Nutz in You’re the Worst, Curtis in black-ish, and Bobby in The Last O.G. He’s also set to appear opposite Dulé Hill in his new show The Wonder Years.
Who’s Writing Psych 3?
James and Steve are reuniting to write the film. The pair also wrote the two previous Psych movies.
Will There Be a Psych 4?
According to Steve, he’d love to do six Psych movies total. After the first Psych movie dropped in 2017, Steve said,
“When we were ending the show and steering it towards a conclusion, I was sort of steering it towards the two-hour world. I steered it right towards doing one [movie], and I realized by saying something over and over maybe I could talk it into existence. So I thought if I can talk into existence one, maybe I can talk into existence six.”
As for the cast, they’re totally on board to keep going indefinitely. Timothy Omundson previously told EW,
“I will do as many of these movies as they could possibly come up with. I think the entire cast and crew would just love to keep doing this for as long as people will watch.”
For James Roday Rodriguez, he’s happy to keep doing movies as long as it’s still fun to watch two dudes act like children and not “sad.” He told Collider in 2020,
“So much of Psych is relegated on to two dudes who don’t wanna grow up and who continue to act like children. So, the question is, and it’s a fair one, is at what point is the line of diminishing returns? At what point do you go, ‘Oh, it used to be really funny when they did that bit, and now it’s sad?'”
“When you cross that line, that’s it. That’s when it needs to be done. We haven’t figured that out yet, thank goodness, but I do think that there is probably a statute of limitations on that type of behavior.”
Where Can You Watch the Psych Cast in the Meantime?
If you’re missing the Psych gang, luckily they’ve all been pretty busy these days.
Dulé just landed a starring role in the reboot of The Wonder Years as the father Bill Williams. The show is set to premiere on ABC on September 22, 2021.
Timothy recently made his return to TV following his stroke in a guest role on This is Us as Gregory. He appeared in six episodes in total.
Maggie recently completed her role as Kay on the short-lived series Outmatched on Fox and is looking for her next project.
Stay tuned for more updates on Psych 3.
