Rowan Blanchard has been ahead of the game so many times.
She’s amazed us with her feminist discourse at just 14 and she speaks out about the walls built up around marginalized people in our society. Seriously, this girl is smarter than like, over half Congress.
About a year ago, Rowan wrote a long response to a Tumblr user on her blog that completely blew up. The user had asked Rowan’s opinion on white feminism and how it might exclude women of color.
At the time, Rowan didn’t think much of it. Speaking with The Edit, she said,
“When I woke up, I was like, ‘Oh, shit!’”
Her answer now has almost 6,000 notes on Tumblr.
But Rowan knows her privilege, and she knows other actresses of color are speaking out about the same issues and yet few people are paying attention.
“Amandla [Stenberg] has been saying the same things I’ve been saying since before I said them. But because I’m white, because I was relatively known, people listened.”
That doesn’t mean she isn’t going to take advantage of her privilege, though. And it doesn’t mean she should be quiet
“The benefits of feminism being used in this context is that hopefully a seven-year-old girl somewhere sees that headline and is like, ‘What is feminism?’ If I just sit around with this privilege where people can actually listen to what I’m saying and I don’t use that, what does that mean?”
Rowan remains incredibly active on social media, constantly posting about the resistance and the importance of feminism. And as a former Disney star, her platform is one of the most valuable ones for young girls today.
