She may receive a ton of flak for it, but actress Scarlett Johansson is never afraid to speak her mind.
“I’m not asking her to come out and talk about something she doesn’t believe in…I know it’s complicated. It’s her father. Can you imagine? Maybe she’s afraid she’ll be abandoned. It’s hard to put yourself in somebody’s position like that. But how do you move the needle in one direction or the other? Hopefully, she’ll make a courageous choice and stand up for what she believes in — whatever that might happen to be.”
This is a stark difference from previous statements she’s made about the first daughter. In April, she came out swinging at Ivanka and said,
“She said something that I found particularly disappointing, which is that the greatest change she was going to make … would be behind closed doors, and nobody would actually know she made this change. I thought to myself, ‘Well, that’s empowering!’ How old-fashioned, this idea that behind a great man is a great woman. What about being in front of that person, or next to that person?”
So what accounts for the huge shift in opinion?
It’s particularly odd timing considering what went down with President Trump and the Paris Climate Accord withdrawal yesterday. The media credited Ivanka with trying to “moderate” her father and said that she would hugely impact him on issues of climate change. Hah! See what good that did! Clearly, she has little to no influence at all.
Word of advice, Scarlett: Now is not the time to go easy on Ivanka. If anything, it’s the time to pressure her into stepping up and taking her power back.
