Take a seat, Nick, and listen to your fans.

Nick Jonas has long been accused of “queerbaiting” his fans, which, as HuffPo’s Queer Voices Deputy Editor JamesMichael Nichols puts it, is “marketing himself, and his sex appeal, to gay men.”

The actor has appeared on the cover of Out magazine, played a number of gay characters as an actor, and has even been dubbed as the new “gay icon,” a title that Nick seems to have embraced. He often calls out his love for his gay fans on social media. And for the last two years he’s received flack.

But when the singer/actor took to the stage at the recent vigil/rally at Stonewall to honor the victims of the recent Orlando shooting, sh*t hit the fan. His fans went crazy with criticism on social media and he was even booed while onstage.

Mikelle Street explains it best in the Complex article “Dear Nick Jonas: The LGBT Community Needs You to STFU,”

“As an ally to any marginalized community, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is know when to yield the floor and give someone else the spotlight.”

Members of the LGBTQ community were furious that a straight white man would be allowed to speak at such a meaningful event for the community.

“How dare someone who is not one of us speak at a HISTORIC site for LGBT rights and speak about this tragedy that has taken the lives of nearly 50 of our own,” artist/photographer Shon Yves told Complex.

Nick’s attempt to be an ally looked especially suspicious considering his newest album had just come out on June 10th. So while we give Nick the benefit of the doubt and believe he had only the best of intentions, maybe it’s time he took a cue from the community and take a step back.
