Jack Johnson just dropped a subtle anti-Trump anthem and we are all about it.
Johnson is pretty much the king of calm beach jams so it’s definitely a little unusual for him to get political. His new single “My Mind is for Sale” is all about breaking down walls, both literally and figuratively. He also addresses Trump‘s “America first” rhetoric head-on with lyrics such as:
“I don’t care for your paranoid ‘us against them’ walls / I don’t care for your careless ‘me first, gimme gimme’ appetite at all”
He uses this same theme in the lyric video, which he made with his kids, in which block walls are built up and then knocked down.
He told Rolling Stone,
“This album shares what has been on my mind during the past year or so. A year in which I sailed through the North Atlantic Gyre for a documentary about plastic pollution in the ocean. A year in which Trump was elected as the President of the United States. A year in which I camped, surfed, got stitches, explored, dreamed, shared time and endless conversations with my family and friends … all of which inspired these songs.”
It’s one of the few times that Johnson has taken a stab at current events. The one other time that comes to mind is his song “The News” which takes on the casual way in which the media handles death.
