American Eagle has taken another step towards inclusivity. The mainstream brand debuted a new lightweight denim hijab as part of their latest collection.
Somalian-born model Halima Aden sported the hijab in the latest AE campaign and then revealed that the brand will yes, in fact, be selling the hijab for public consumption for $19.95.
The reaction has been largely positive so far on social media. Despite a few questions surrounding the choice of denim — can you imagine donning denim on your head in 90-degree heat? — most are thrilled that such a huge western brand is making an attempt at inclusivity.
We’re personally more impressed by the use of Aden as their model. A refugee herself, Halima became the first hijab-wearing model signed to IMG and then appeared in Kanye West‘s Yeezy show. Since then, she’s appeared on the cover of Allure and Vogue Arabia, establishing herself as a role model for Muslim women across the globe. In her Vogue interview, she said,
“Every little girl deserves to see a role model that’s dressed like her, resembles her or even has the same characteristics as her. I think beauty is for everyone and I think everyone can look beautiful, you just have to be confident.”
