Actress Ariel Winter recently attended a panel with her fellow Modern Family co-stars rocking a gold-embellished mini dress and looking fierce as hell. Some of her co-stars opted for a more casual look, and it took exactly zero seconds from Internet trolls to pile on the comments about Ariel’s outfit.
From comments saying Winter was “trying too hard” or everyone’s classic go-to “she looks slutty”, I had to stop myself from reading more comments before my eyes rolled out of my skull.

My personal favorite comments were ones that read “I love her BUT” or “I love her confidence BUT”. Shhhh. Shhh. Stop. No one asked for your opinion. Unless she specifically asked you, then shush. Literally, who cares? Who is reading your dumb Twitter comment and thinking “ahh, what a well-thought out take, thank you for opening up my eyes to a fresh perspective!”. Not me, not anyone.
Ariel wasn’t having it either. She took to Instagram, posting a note that read,
“Why TF does anyone care that I didn’t dress casual like everyone else for the panel? Why do I have to be like everyone else? Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want? WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT PEOPLE! As long as you feel good about yourself, that’s what matters. I know I did. Don’t let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself.”
Yes, girl! I think anyone who commented negatively should go back to Kindergarten. They clearly missed the “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all” memo.
These critiques come just after Ariel was accused of trying to look like Kylie Jenner at Coachella. Can we just let her live? Cool.
