It’s officially March, which means something big is coming. We are mere weeks away from the premiere of the highly anticipated live-action Beauty and the Beast and now we know some big news about the film: Beauty and the Beast will feature a gay character.
The film is gaining a lot of attention in preparation for its release. With the revelation of John Legend and Ariana Grande‘s duet, the news of Celine Dion’s original song, and the excitement of seeing Emma Watson in this role, Disney fans are at the edge of their seats.
In an interview with Attitude, director Bill Condon reveals that a particular character will have an “exclusively gay moment” in his back story.
The character LeFou, played by Josh Gad, questions his feelings for Gaston in the film.
Condon explains,
“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.”
Condon adds the beauty is in Gad’s performance and hints at some sort of “payoff” at the end of the film.
Josh Gad himself took to Twitter to respond to reactions to this news.

This kind of subplot is a first for a Disney blockbuster, and we are excited to see how it plays out in the film. It will open doors for discussion of the portrayal of LGBTQ characters in fictional films, and the role that reboots play in modernizing an old story.
The movie premieres March 17.
