Oh, Bernie Sanders. Your campaign is off to an… interesting start.
The 2020 hopeful recently announced his official bid for president and later appeared on Vermont Public Radio to discuss his campaign.
During the convo, he pleaded with listeners not to discriminate against him because he’s an old white guy (you know, because old white guys are super discriminated against).
Bernie told the interviewer,
“We have got to look at candidates not by the color of their skin, not by their sexual orientation or gender and not by their age. I think we have got to try to move us toward a nondiscriminatory society that looks at people based on their abilities, based on what they stand for.”
Bernie is clearly intimated by the Democrat’s most diverse pool of candidates ever, which includes white women, women of color, men of color, and white gay men. He desperately wants to remind you that old white men need a little love too.
Ironically, Bernie’s statement proves exactly why many people are saying they do not want to vote for another old white guy.
What Bernie so clearly fails to recognize is that a candidate’s abilities, viewpoints, and morals are influenced by their backgrounds. A person’s race, sexuality, gender, and socioeconomic status help shape them as a person. And if Bernie wants us to ignore all of this then his point-of-view is quite short-sided.
Perhaps even worse than his tone-deaf statement on diversity is his insinuation on discrimination — mainly that he doesn’t want you to hate on him for being a white man.
This is pretty much the exact same thing that all those insecure, MAGA assholes have been complaining about. Instead of listening to the oppressed, they have decided to make themselves the victim.
Bernie, you are not the victim here. With the exception of one president, white men have held the presidential office since the founding of our country. They have never historically been “discriminated against” and I can’t imagine that’s largely going to change now.
If Bernie doesn’t learn to check his privilege then he’ll never be the “woke” candidate he thinks he is.
If you want to hear these exact same sentiments, only funnier, check out Stephen Colbert’s monologue below.
