'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Trailer Proves It Could Be Just As Good As Season 1

The “Monterey Five,” as the group is now known, are back in the new teaser for Big Little Lies season 2, which HBO released this week along with a long-awaited premiere date announcement.

The murder mystery’s second season will kick off on June 9 with seven episodes and all original characters returning. And this season, their lies just may finally catch up with them.

The teaser finds our favorite group of complicated women still haunted by the deadly secret that binds them. It seems that people are talking, and their whispers are closing in on the quintet, “…like we all have scarlet letters on our backs,” Jane (Shailene Woodley) says.

It’s clear that the fallout from season one will be the center of this season’s plot.  The first season — spoiler alert — saw Jane, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) each play a part in the murder of Celeste’s abusive husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) and its subsequent cover-up.

In season two, the women are trying to move on from their lies, but instead, are finding themselves crushed by the weight of it all. “It’s gonna get us. It’s gonna get us all,” Bonnie says in the teaser. And she may not be wrong, as a new character is entering the mix to stir things up.

The incomparable Meryl Streep will be joining the cast in season two, playing Mary Louise Wright, the deceased Perry’s mother. She has arrived in Monterey to investigate the death of her son, and she’s not going to stop until she gets answers.

As the first season was based on the popular standalone novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, some may be worried that there is not enough story left to tell given that we’re now off-script. Or worse yet, that adding additional twists and turns will sour the core story. But the same writer, David E. Kelley, is back on board for this season, and he will be working from a novella also written by Moriarty.

According to HBO, the show’s second season will “continue to explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting… things could get messy.” And with a stack of Emmys and some of the world’s most dynamic actresses behind it, I can’t wait to dive back into the show.

Perhaps the most chilling clip from the teaser shows Mary Louise talking to Madeline, her voice measured and calm, but her eyes anything but.

She tells Madeline,

“I want to know what happened that night. I’m very tempted to ask you, but I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?”

Season 2 of Big Little Lies premieres June 9 on HBO.
