'Brooklyn 99' Chelsea Peretti's Departure Will Kill the Show

Chelsea Peretti, what have you done?

Chelsea has officially announced she is leaving Brooklyn 99 sometime next season and fans are heartbroken. Chelsea wrote on Twitter,

“I won’t be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine in Season 6. But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji. I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina: confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation. It is hard for me to know exactly what to say.”

Brooklyn 99 is an ensemble show and Chelsea leaving could be the kiss of death. Ever since the first season, the show has teetered on the edge of cancelation (it was even canceled recently by Fox only to be picked up by NBC at the last second).

The success of Brooklyn 99 has been based largely on its amazing ensemble cast, so when one of the main stars leaves it truly threatens the ecosystem.

We got a taste of what the show would be like sans Gina when she went on maternity leave last season. Although the show clearly carried on fine, could it truly last without Gina permanently?

There have been plenty of shows that have lost one of its stars — That 70s Show, The OC, The Office, Vampire Diaries — but most could only last one or two seasons beyond that.

Although Chelsea is not the main star, her presence is definitely a game changer. Co-creator Dan Goor promised that Chelsea would return for guest appearances, but it certainly won’t be the same.

Earlier this summer, Emmy Rossum announced she was leaving her show, Shameless, as well so it will be interesting to see if either show can survive past one more season.

I fear for Brooklyn 99 and I pray they can someone fill the hole left by Chelsea, but I won’t keep my hopes up. This could finally be the end for the precinct.
