Demi Lovato recently appeared on Ellen to discuss her bulimia and she says that her new manager Scooter Braun has been truly influential in her recovery.
Demi told Ellen DeGeneres that her previous team would, unbeknownst to her, secretly remove all sugar from any room she was in and would take out the phone from her hotel room to prevent her from ordering room service. As Demi explains,
“My life, I just felt it was so… and I hate to use this word, but I felt it was controlled, by so many people around me.”
Even worse was the fact that her team didn’t know how, or wasn’t willing to, help her through her struggles.
“My bulimia got really bad and I asked for help and I didn’t receive the help that I needed. So I was stuck in this unhappy position. Here I am sober and I’m thinking to myself, ‘I’m six years sober, but I’m miserable. I’m even more miserable than I was when I was drinking. Why am I sober?'”
Her team ended up abandoning her after that, which is when she met Scooter Braun. Perhaps one of the most notable memories she has with Scooter is her 27th birthday when he made her dreams of having a real birthday cake come true.
“For many years, I didn’t even have a birthday cake. I had a watermelon cake, where you cut your watermelon into the shape of a cake and you put fat-free whipped cream on top and that was your cake. I just really wanted a birthday cake, so this year when I turned 27, you know, I have a new team, and Scooter Braun, my manager, gave me the best birthday cake.”
“I just remember crying because I was finally eating cake with a manager that didn’t need anything from me and that loved me for who I am and supported my journey. I think at some point it becomes dangerous to try to control someone’s food when they’re in recovery from an eating disorder.”
Scooter Braun, who is also Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber‘s manager, has recently been in the news for all the wrong reasons because of his dealings with Taylor Swift. So Demi’s perspective is definitely quite a stark one to the one we’ve received so far.
Taylor first spoke out against Scooter after he bought Big Machine Label Group as well as Taylor’s entire back-catalog of music. According to Taylor, Scooter has been bullying her for years. She wrote in a Tumblr post,
“All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video, which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”
As for Scooter’s clients, they only have kind words to say about him. Prior to the Scooter-Taylor feud, Ariana defended Scooter against fan criticism in 2018, writing,
“Scooter is a wonderful human being too who cares first [and] foremost [about] our health and happiness.”
And when Demi signed with Scooter back in May 2019, she wrote on Instagram,
“Couldn’t be happier, inspired and excited to begin this next chapter with you Scooter!!! Thank you for believing in me and for being apart of this new journey.”
Regardless of how you feel about Scooter Braun after everything that went down with Taylor Swift, it’s wonderful that Demi found someone who encourages her to be happy and healthy.
