'Dirty John' Is Getting a Scripted Series on Bravo

Oh, it was only a matter of time. The hit true crime podcast Dirty John by the L.A. Times is getting the scripted TV treatment courtesy of Bravo.

The podcast told the story of grifter John Meehan who latched onto the Newell family by seducing and marrying the mother Debra. After a short time, however, Debra and her family soon discovered all the lies they had been told and the scary truth started unraveling. Now, remember, this was a true crime story, so obviously, somebody had to die.The entire 6-part podcast, and corresponding article series, riveted everyone and continues to be on the top charts on Apple.

So is it really such a shock that somebody scooped it up? Bravo only has a handful of scripted shows right now and this will be its first foray into true crime. But with the success of Making a Murderer, The Keepers, The Jinx, and more, Bravo has to get in the game in order to compete.

The show doesn’t have a premiere date yet, and actually hasn’t been written yet, but it already has Desperate Housewives Executive Producer Alexandra Cunningham attached to the project.

Personally, I’m much more interested in a docuseries than a scripted one and lucky for me, Oxygen will be doing just that. The Oxygen series will tell the “real-life experiences” of those affected by John Meehan, according to THR.

Hopefully, both Bravo and Oxygen will do the Newell family justice. No word yet on whether the Newells have given their blessing on either series. It will be interesting to see if they get involved in any way. Stay tuned.
