Listen up Jane the Virgin fans. We’ve got some….interesting…news.
Justin Baldoni (aka Rafael) is developing a talk show, Variety reports.
After reading the exclusive report detailing the plan for the show, we are feeling slightly hesitant.
The show, entitled The Men’s Room, will be a “disruptive weekly panel series that explores what it means to be a man today.”
Okay, we’re listening….
Baldoni explained that will include an all-male panel, which hasn’t really been done like this before. He said,
“I think that one of the main reasons the talk show space hasn’t previously seen an all-male show is simply because our culture has taught men that they need to be strong, confident, and stoic and that emotions are a sign of weakness. Men in our society have been socialized to suppress their feelings. We want to challenge men to open up and be okay talking to each other, and more importantly, form deep and meaningful relationships.”
“We will cover a little bit of everything. Anything men secretly think about, yet don’t always have an opportunity to openly discuss.”
I mean, I am into the idea of a show challenging some of our society’s toxic notions of masculinity, but also have this weird feeling that this format could go awry. I’m hoping that the panel will be truly diverse for more interesting perspectives. I’m not really interested in hearing about straight white male first world problems. But Justin seems to have a good head on his shoulders, so hopefully this won’t be the case.
The show is still in its very early stages, and the length and platform on which it will air is still unknown. Baldoni is hoping it will be distributed by Netflix or HBO.
The Men’s Room will be produced by Wayfarer Entertainment, Baldoni’s media company.
Even though Justin plays a lead on a pretty progressive TV show, this talk show idea still seems a little questionable.
I guess we will have to see if and where it gets picked up to see how it all plays out.
