A stylist has officially confirmed what we already knew in our heart: Justin Timberlake had every intention of exposing Janet Jackson’s breast at the 2004 Super Bowl.
Celebrity stylist Wayne Scot Lukas recently spoke with Page Six where he explained exactly what went down.
According to Wayne, Justin was intent on outdoing Britney Spears and Madonna, who had kissed at the 2003 MTV VMAs just a few months earlier. Apparently, Justin “insisted on doing something bigger than their performance. He wanted a reveal.”
The original plan was for Justin to expose Janet’s lower half. Wayne said,
“Janet was going to be in a Rocha dress, and [Justin] was going to step on the back of her dress to reveal her butt in this pearl G-string.”
That plan was eventually nixed and they decided to pull off Janet’s top instead.
After the incident, which was dubbed Nipple Gate, Janet received a ton of backlash while Justin pretty much got away scot-free.
The media claimed that it was all a planned stunt by Janet to sell more records. Meanwhile, Justin seemed to enjoy the attention and told Access Hollywood at the time,
“Hey man, we love giving you all something to talk about!”
He later apologized, calling it a wardrobe malfunction, but stylist Wayne confirmed this was a lie. He said,
“I wouldn’t call it a wardrobe ‘malfunction’ in a million years. It was the most functioning wardrobe in history. As a stylist, it did what it was intended to do.”
Janet, of course, was humiliated by the incident. A little after Nipple Gate, she said,
“It’s truly embarrassing for me to know that 90 million [140 million] people saw my breast, and then to see it blown up on the Internet the size of a computer screen.”
It’s unclear how all of this went down without Janet’s knowledge. At the time, her representative said that the plan was for Justin “to pull away the rubber bustier to reveal a red lace bra. The garment collapsed and her breast was accidentally revealed.”
This is perfectly plausible since you can clearly see a red polka dot bra peaking out of the top of Janet’s black rubber bustier.
As for Wayne, he said he’ll defend Janet until the end.
“I’ll never throw her under the bus. She’s my friend and is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever worked for. There’s nothing shady about her.”
