Kristen Bell’s latest role is Karen in the new production of CHiPs. But it turns out, she almost didn’t make the cut. Apparently, her husband the film’s director/star Dax Shepard just didn’t think she was up to it!
Speaking with Bustle, Bell recounted how Shepard had hesitations about giving her the role, partially because he just thought she was too nice.
“We actually just had a long talk about it, and I said, ‘whatever you decide, I totally get it.'”
He was also cautious because he didn’t want their amazing and obviously palpable chemistry to affect the film, since their characters in CHiPs aren’t too keen on each other.
“He made a very good point, which is why he’s a good director — he said, ‘I don’t want anyone even subconsciously to be rooting for us, during this movie.’”
But luckily he decided to give his wife a chance. The two even made a funny video about mocking the decision for Funny or Die in which Kristen is forced to audition for Dax. LOL!
But despite being “too nice” in person, Bell has actually proven to be quite the competent villain on screen, so Dax should have nothing to worry about! Her current role as Eleanor on hit TV show The Good Place certainly proved that — after all, Eleanor isn’t exactly winning any awards for niceties there.
Speaking of the role, Bell said,
“It gave me my very favorite challenge, which is finding an inherently unlikable character on paper, and figuring out how to get you on her side.”
The Good Place — which follows Eleanor after she dies and accidentally ends up in heaven — ended the first season with a major twist that left fans with their jaws on the floor. It’s already been renewed for another season. The show returns in the fall of 2017.
In the meantime, Bell will be busy with the Frozen spinoff, How to be a Latin Lover, and making a cameo in The Disaster Artist.
