Fans Are Incorrectly Assuming That Billie Dee Williams is Genderfluid (Hint: He's Not)

This is what happens when you leap to conclusions.

In his new interview for Esquire, the legendary Billie Dee Williams opened up about embracing both masculine and feminine pronouns. Ever since, headlines have been incorrectly claiming that the actor came out as genderfluid.

Speaking with The Undefeated, Billie reacted to everyone’s decision to label him as such and said,

“Well, first of all, I asked last night. I said, ‘What the hell is gender fluid?’ That’s a whole new term.”

He continued,

“I was talking about was about men getting in touch with their softer side of themselves…. so, that’s what I was referring to. I was talking about men getting in touch with the female side of themselves.”

This whole thing that kicked this off when Billie told Esquire,

“I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine. I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”

This led many people to incorrectly assume that Billie identified as genderfluid — not the case. Billie still very much identifies as a man, as confirmed to The Undefeated.

It’s certainly understandable why fans would come to this conclusion. But this is a great reminder of how incredibly important it is not to label others or make assumptions. From now on, wait for someone to tell you how they identify. Because at the end of the day, you don’t determine their identity, they do.
