Leighton Meester’s personal life is something she rarely discusses. Her marriage to now-husband Adam Brody was kept under wraps and she’s never even posted a picture of two-year-old daughter Arlo Day.

The Making History star recently spoke with Refinery29 about why she insists on keeping Arlo out of the public eye.

“I don’t talk about Arlo very much. I am very proud of that area of my life. But I’m also really proud of the show, and of the work I do.”

The Gossip Girl alum added that she doesn’t want to be stereotyped just because she’s a mother now.

“I think the perception is: You’re an ingenue, or you’re an icon, or you’re a mom. There’s no in between.”

And unfortunately Leighton is right — so often actresses are solely asked about their family life on the red carpet, rather than about their work,  unlike their male counterparts. It’s that exact trend that inspired the hashtag #AskHerMore to show that women aren’t just moms; they’re complex people with a lot to offer.

Leighton Meester’s new show Making History just premiered last month on Fox. She stars opposite The Mindy Project alum Adam Pally.
