We’ve seen a lot of different versions of Miley Cyrus.

From her Hannah Montana days to twerking and straddling a wrecking ball, to judging on The Voice, we’ve seen a little bit of everything. So what is she up to now?

In her new cover story with Billboard, readers see a new version of Miley, perhaps an even more authentic one.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the interview.

She had to refall in love with Liam Hemsworth.
The couple split back in 2013 and reunited last year. Miley admits she had some changing to do, which is what lead to the breakup as well as the reunion. Cyrus explained,<

“I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to refall for each other.”

She wants to appeal to everyone on the political spectrum, but not for financial gain.
Miley wants to engage in conversations with people who don’t necessarily agree with her. She explains that you can’t necessarily bring about change if you’re always preaching to the choir. Miley said,

“I like the way I think right now. But don’t Trump supporters like the way they think? So I’ve also got to be open with the way I approach people with my opinions. That’s the only way to make real change. And it’s not because I want to sell records!”

She also stated,

“This record is a reflection of the fact that yes, I don’t give a fuck, but right now is not a time to not give a fuck about people, I’m giving the world a hug and saying, ‘Hey, look. We’re good — I love you.’ And I hope you can say you love me back.”

She’s no longer smoking weed (for now)
Miley had been very open about her drug use, but is now living a drug and alcohol free lifestyle, by choice. She states that she’s doing it for herself, and not because people told her too. She explained,
“I like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned. I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be.”

She wants to be taken seriously as a country artist.
Miley has dabbled in pop and hip-hop, but fears that she won’t be respected as a country artist, which is the direction she’s looking to take. She’s planning on using her platform as a judge on The Voice next season to appeal to country artists while utilizing her friendship with Blake Shelton. Additionally, Miley hopes that her godmother Dolly Parton will help her garner the respect from the country music community.

She’s dropping new music this year.
Miley’s new single “Malibu” will drop on May 11, with a full album releasing sometime later this year. The single is about Hemsworth and will sound unlike anything Miley has released before.

We look forward to seeing Miley move in this new direction! Read the full interview on Billboard’s website.
