If you were hoping Mindy and Danny were endgame on The Mindy Project, don’t hold your breath. In fact, she may not end up with anyone when the series wraps this season.
This may come as a bit of a shock to fans who have watched Mindy date guy after guy over the last five years, get engaged to Danny, break her engagement to Danny, and eventually marry Ben. But Mindy’s singlehood is all apart of her transformation as a character. While chatting with THR, writer and actor Ike Barinholtz explained,
“When we started the show, Mindy had this very idealized version of marriage. As she’s evolved, she’s kind of seen that that’s not necessarily what it’s all about. It’s all about you being happy with you.”
He added,
“We kind of thought, going into the last season, we don’t want Mindy to be anything short of happy so letting her kind of discover what she wants and realizing it’s not necessarily being part of a couple.”
This actually closely mirrors Mindy Kaling‘s real life and she previously admitted that she no longer cared so much about getting married. Back in 2015 she told Yahoo!,
“In my 20s, and especially in my teens, I completely fetishized a wedding. But I think much less about marriage now. It’s less interesting to me.”
We love that Mindy doesn’t need a man on-screen or off! Who says being in a couple is the end-all-be-all?
Season 6 of The Mindy Project is currently streaming on Hulu.
