Netflix recently dropped its latest teen film Do Revenge and it’s absolutely worth the hype.
The classic revenge movie, starring Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke, is inspired by all your favorite 90s flicks. Think Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Clueless, and early aughts favorite 10 Things I Hate About You.
And it’s exactly that aesthetic that costume designer Alana Morshead pulled from.
Morshead told InStyle,
“20 years later, those movies are still such cult classics, and they get referenced so much with Halloween costumes or through other movies. If you mention ‘Oh yeah, Cher’s outfit,’ you instantly know what you’re talking about.”
“I wanted to take from that time period, but also make it feel present and be something that you could still wear 20 years from now.”
When it came to Drea (Mendes), Morshead had very specific references in mind.
For her off-campus looks, Drea’s outfits were inspired by 90s supermodels like Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell. The designer even had custom-made pieces created based on their outfits.
In addition to the custom-designed statement outfits (including that red houndstooth matching set), Morshead pulled vintage pieces from Etsy and items made by indie boutiques to complete Drea’s wardrobe.
As for the school uniforms, Morshead found inspiration in Korean schoolgirl uniforms. She explained,
“I love how even at school with the Korean uniforms, the students always look so put-together — the ties are always tied and it’s a full look.”
“With our kids, even at school, they really care about their appearance, and we had so many pairs of earrings, socks, and shoes because that was how they could accessorize and express themselves. It just added to that fun, heightened reality.”
Morshead ended up sourcing the individual pieces from overseas to create the candy-colored schools uniforms of her dreams.
