Netflix’s latest film Fair Play is all about calling out the frail male ego and we are *so* here for it!
Starring Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), Fair Play follows Emily and Luke’s seemingly happy relationships as it quickly deteriorate when Emily gets a promotion over Luke. And, unfortunately, Luke just can’t handle it.
The movie was inspired by writer/director Chloe Dumont’s own experiences. She told EW,
“We’re all afraid to talk about it, because the male ego feels like something that is off limits. Women are taught to walk on eggshells trying to protect it. The reason why I made this film is because I had been experiencing these situations over and over again in relationships, and it was never anything that we could talk about.”
And that’s the key to understanding the film. It’s less about Emily reclaiming her power and more about holding Luke accountable for his toxic masculinity. Dumont explains,
“This isn’t really a film about female empowerment. This is a film about male fragility. The whole film builds up to that last line where she forces him to finally acknowledge that he’s nothing.”
That said, there’s no denying that Emily is a badass, from her attitude to her outfits.
So, let’s celebrate all of her power suits and frilly blouses (screw Luke for telling her she dresses like a cupcake!).
