Netflix has officially dropped the most highly-anticipated film of the year, May December.
The movie stars Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton and is loosely inspired by the true story of teacher Mary Kay Letourneau who raped her 12-year-old student Vili Gualaau in the late 90s. The pair had two children together — one while Letourneau was awaiting sentencing and another while in prison — and they eventually married when she was released. They remained married for 14 years, just prior to her death. Needless, to say, they were tabloid fodder for years.
In May December, Letourneau and Gualaau are swapped out for characters Gracie Atherton (Julianne Moore) and Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), with events taking place 20 years after their “relationship” began. They’re seemingly living a picturesque life when actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) comes along, hoping to prepare to portray Gracie on screen. But her presence stirs up old drama that the couple thought was long buried.
The film has already gotten enormous praise from critics. Viewers are a little less… enthusiastic.
Regardless of whether you loved or hated the film, one thing is clear: the costume design is spot-on.
