‘New Girl’ Finally Reveals Schmidt’s First Name

Wow. Just wow. New Girl has finally revealed Schmidt’s first name and it’s a doozy.

If you haven’t yet watched Tuesday’s episode, then warning, SPOILERS AHEAD!

Ok, now that we have that out of the way, drumroll, please…

Say hello to Winston Schmidt!

Yes, Winston. Winston and Schmidt share a first name. The name is certainly a shocker considering that “Winston” isn’t a particularly Jewish name (nor is his middle name, Saint Marie).

The writers have been toying with Schmidt’s first name since the first season and were initially planning on going with something “more Hebraic.” But in the end, they just felt it wasn’t right.

Co-showrunner Dave Finkel explained,

“We just decided that it was not the right time, and that it was too soon, and that we were shooting ourselves in the foot, comedy-wise.”

The idea of giving Schmidt a first name has come up in the writer’s room every season, but they tried to hold off as long as they could. But since Fox has yet to pick up the 7th season on New Girl, they felt it was now or never.

“We also didn’t know if this was the end of the road, so we wanted to finally do it.”

But if you think that the big reveal will change anything about the character, think again.

“In the end, Schmidt is Schmidt. Once it becomes a part of your personality, it doesn’t change that much.”

We certainly hope that New Girl isn’t going anywhere. If we don’t live in a world where Nick and Jess end up together, it’s not a world we want to live in!

Of course, Zooey Deschanel has a lot on her plate right now, so who knows if she’s even interested in doing another season. On top of just having a baby, she’s also busy running her very successful website Hello Giggles.
