Guys. Guys. Guys. I’m freaking out.
A Riverdale companion series featuring Sabrina the Teenage Witch is in the works.
None of that is a typo. That is very real. And I am already very excited.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that following the success of Riverdale, the CW is looking to expand the Archie universe with several companion series. The first one is called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Side note, I did not realize Sabrina the Teenage Witch was part of the Archie universe?!? I guess you really do learn something new every day.
THR states,
“The hourlong drama reimagines the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft, naturally. The new iteration is described as in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist and finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
So, it’ll definitely be quite different than the Melissa Joan Hart comedy. But with the stunning success of darker shows on the CW like Riverdale and Supernatural, we have really high hopes.
Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is working on the series, which will hopefully air in the 2018-2019 TV season if it’s picked up.
We do have one concern though: Will it still have a sassy Salem?
