Another day, another celebrity who has to defend her body type to the ignorant masses.

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland took to Twitter yesterday to address comments that she is “too skinny” and is “promoting anorexia.”

Hyland said,

“I haven’t had the greatest year. Maybe one day I’ll talk about it but for now, I’d like my privacy. I will say that this year has brought a lot of changes and with that, physical changes. I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting.”

She explained,

“I’ve basically been put on bed rest for the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass. My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like.”

Sarah also added,

“My self-confidence is not rendered from your comments. Because I will always be too fat. I will always be too skinny. I will never have enough curves to be called a woman. And I will always be a slut for wearing a push-up bra. Love the you you set out to be. Be the best version of yourself.”

The notes came in response to a slew of comments on recent posts, in which people noticed she looked thinner than usual. The majority of comments, Hyland points out, ironically are left on an anti-bullying post she put on Instagram.

There are a few takeaway lessons people should realize from Sarah’s posts, and others like it. You should never comment on someone’s body type, whether it’s weight gain or weight loss. I thought that should be obvious by now.

Hyland has also struggled with kidney dysplasia, which she was diagnosed with when she was only 9-years-old. She underwent a kidney transplant in 2012 but continues to deal with health concerns.

Sarah told Seventeen back in 2015,

“I was born with so many health issues that doctors told my mother I would never have a normal life.”

This leads to lesson #2: You never know what is going on in someone’s personal life. Illness, stress, family matters, and more can lead to physical changes in one’s body, and people don’t always want to share these personal matters with the world. And regardless, it’s none of our business anyway. No one owes us an explanation.

Sarah isn’t the only Modern Family star who has been unfairly criticized recently. Ariel Winter clapped back at trolls who slammed her outfit for being “too sexy.”

So one last time for the people in the back: Let. them. live.

Thanks.
