Selena Gomez Has *The* Best Response to This ’13 Reasons Why’ Criticism

Selena Gomez recently chatted on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show where she dished on everything new music, The Weeknd, and of course, 13 Reasons Why.

Gomez serves as an executive producer of the Netflix show, which is based on the book of the same name. It follows the story of Hannah Baker and why she decides to commit suicide as a high school teen. Back in the day, the book was going to become a feature film with Gomez playing the lead role, but as that fell through and Gomez’s career transitioned, it ended up becoming a Netflix series with Katherine Langford as Hannah and boy are we glad it did! The cast and crew did an amazing job and handled tough issues with grace.

But not everyone agreed with the depiction of the suicide and also of Jessica’s rape. Critics said it was too graphic for the age group.

So what does Selena have to say about this?

“This is happening every day, so whether or not you wanted to see it, that’s what’s happening. I think that stuff is uncomfortable for people to talk about but it is happening and hopefully, it opened the door for people to actually accept what’s happening and actually go and change it, talk about it.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

According to The Jason Foundation, there are 5,240 suicide attempts every single day by kids between the ages of 12-18. So this is happening whether folks like it or not and it’s time we talk about it honestly and openly.

And season 2 is sure to continue dealing with those tough subjects. The showrunner previously discussed how they plan to handle Jessica’s rape and how they will continue dealing with the fallout from Hannah’s suicide.

Selena commented on the progress of season 2 and said,

“I went to the writers’ room the other day and I felt like I was watching a movie because I was freaking out on where they’re going [with the season]. It’s actually really encouraging and empowering and so we’re going to take a little inspiration from the first and bring it into the second.”
