Dads are notorious for being annoyingly protective over their daughters. But rapper T.I. just took things to a creepy, possessive level.
T.I. joined Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham on a recent episode of their podcast Ladies Like Us. The interview started out lighthearted enough with the rapper gushing about his children and the evolution of his show T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle.
But things took a creepy turn when the group began to discuss strict parenting styles towards the end of the episode. When asked if he’d ever had the sex talk with his daughters, T.I. unabashedly admitted that he goes to the gynecologist every year with his 18-year-old daughter Deyjah Harris. But not to ensure that she’s in good health, but to make sure that her hymen is still intact.
“Deyjah’s 18, just graduated high school now and she’s attending her first year of college, figuring it out for herself. And yes, not only have we had the [sex] conversation, we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen.”
The women laughed at the revelation and one of them even jokingly commented that Deyjah was a prisoner and needed to be checked on to make sure she was alright. Yet, neither of them let him know that his parenting method was downright weird.
He then began to tell the women about Deyjah’s visit to the gynecologist after her sixteenth birthday.
“So we’ll go and sit down and the doctor will come and talk and the doctor’s maintaining a high level of professionalism. He’s like, ‘You know sir, I have to, in order to share information’ — I’m like, ‘Deyjah they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you wouldn’t want me to know? See doc? No problem.’ And so then they come and say, ‘Well I just want you to know that there are other ways besides sex that the hymen can be broken like bike riding, athletics, horseback riding and just other forms of athletic physical activity.’ So I say, ‘Look doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen please and give me back my results expeditiously.’”
He clearly doesn’t see what he’s doing as intrusive and intimidating. It’s doubtful that Deyjah even wants her father to be at her doctor’s visits, and by having him breathing down her neck, she’s probably too nervous to tell him that her vagina is her business.
No matter what the age, doctor-patient confidentiality is a right that everyone has. Unless you’re in danger, the doctor does not have to tell your parents a thing.
T.I.’s misogynistic and barbaric belief system isn’t exactly surprising. In his new podcast ExpediTIously, he said that when it comes to sex, his wife’s vagina is half his.
“See, you can’t be rationing out stuff, talking about what you’re going to give nobody because what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is yours. That means that little thing you got, that little sex box you got is half mine. So you pick which side you want, and that’s yours. The rest of it is mine. We can split it right down the middle of the…what do they call it? The, the, the, is it the, ‘uvula’?”
He continued,
“What I’m saying is, it’s half mine. And my half is on the inside”
First off, gross. And second, do you really want a man that doesn’t know the difference between a uvula and a vulva?
To make matters worse, during Ladies Like Us, he announced (without Deyjah’s consent) that her hymen is still intact and that she’s a virgin. He even joked that he doesn’t have to worry about his daughter dating too much in college because “who wants a virgin? They’re no fun. Like really? All that work.”
