Wicked mania is in full swing — and for good reason. The film is absolutely fabulous, from the singing to thechoreography to the set designs.
But perhaps the best part of Wicked is all the incredible costumes, which were custom-designed by the film’s costume designer Paul Tazewell.
Tazewell had a pretty difficult task in front of him — the Broadway musical Wicked has a huge and dedicated fanbase and the original film The Wizard of Oz is iconic. So creating costumes for two such beloved characters was a lot of pressure. But he was up to the challenge.
According to Tazewell, he took more inspiration from the OG 1939 film than from the Broadway musical itself. He told Elle,
“I was actually inspired greatly by the 1939 film. You see that represented in the bubble dress; I wanted for it to feel like the same kind of Glinda dress in the pink, and then use that throughout her color story. Same for Elphaba in her iconic wicked witch silhouette, with the hat and the dress.”
All in all, he ended up creating 25 looks for Glinda and 24 for Elphaba. And that doesn’t even account for the hundreds of costumes he had to create for the group scenes.
Prior to working on Wicked, Tazewell designed for Hamilton (both the Broadway production and the movie adaptation) and the 2021 movie remake of West Side Story.
Of course, you can already get dupes of Glinda’s costumes from Wicked on Amazon, but if you’re looking for a more modern take on the looks, specifically Ariana Grande’s outfits as Glinda, check out our picks below for how you can recreate her outfits for the real world.
