On Saturday, January 20th, thousands of people gathered across the country for the Women’s March 2018.
If Trump and the GOP thought we were losing steam, they definitely thought wrong. The resistance is stronger than ever and protests were held in Washington D.C., New York City, Raleigh, Boston, Omaha, Indianapolis, San Diego, Chicago, Baltimore, and more. Some of the speakers included Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Donald S. Beyer Jr., who called out the GOP for the government shutdown.
One of the major complaints of the 2017 Women’s March was that it didn’t do enough to include women of color, something the movement tried hard to correct. A spokesperson for the march, Emily Patton, told the Washington Post,
“This year, we really want to show support for women who are running for office and to encourage more women, women of color and those in the LGBT community, to run for office, to register to vote, to be more civically engaged.”
And it seems like their efforts are working. According to Emily’s List, more than 26,000 women have signed up to run for office since the 2016 election.
But the protest doesn’t end here. Tomorrow a rally will be held in Las Vegas specifically to target swing state Nevada in an attempt to grab Dean Heller’s seat in the midterm election. According to the Post, speakers will include Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, Rep. John Lewis, and more.
