Summer hairstyle trends are officially in full swing and this time people are getting super creative.
Much like makeup trends, many 2022 haircuts are channeling the 90s and Y2K, but with a bit of a twist.
So let’s talk about the biggest hair trends that TikTok is ~obsessed~ with and whether or not they’re a good fit for you.
1. The Jellyfish Haircut

There’s been the mullet, the shag, the octopus, and now, the jellyfish (apparently we really like naming haircuts after sea creatures).
Unlike its inspiration, the jellyfish cut has ditched all those layers in favor of two very blunt, distinctive layers. The top layer is usually above the chin and cuts straight across. The bottom, meanwhile, is usually medium-long in length, depending on the vibe you’re going for. Obviously, the longer the bottom layer is, the more bold the look is overall.
For fans of the jellyfish cut, they love that the hairstyle is a creative way to show off their personality. On top of that, the cut is gender-neutral so it’s perfect for anyone of all gender identities.
On the other hand, those who hate it just find it rather, well, bizarre. The jellyfish cut is definitely a statement-making look and some folks just aren’t that into the statement.
Needless to say, the hairstyle has already proven to be quite controversial on TikTok and Instagram, which some absolutely loving it and others absolutely hating it.
But that’s part of what lovers of the jellyfish, well, love about it! After all, if the hairstyle isn’t making waves, what’s the point?
Although the jellyfish cut’s predecessors used to embrace wavy and curvy hair types, the jellyfish tends to look best on those with stick-straight hair. With wavy, curvy, or afro-textured hair, the jellyfish tends to lose those blunt layers that really define the look.
If you’re looking to get the cut, this is definitely *not* one you’re going to want to DIY. Those perfectly straight-across layers will need to be done in a hair salon to maximize the effect.
No celebs have rocked the jellyfish…yet. But given how extremely popular the mullet was last year, it’s probable that at least one will give it a test drive. Perhaps, Miley Cyrus? We’ll just have to wait and see.
2. The Butterfly Cut

And no, let’s move on to the butterfly haircut.
Inspired by 90s glam, the butterfly haircut embraces long, soft, bouncy layers. Not completely dissimilar from the octopus cut that trended last year, the butterfly haircut embraces the duality of long and short layers. But the butterfly is a significantly more feminine take and is a lot more flexible.
According to hairstylist Ashley Lynn, who chatted with Allure, the hairstyle is great for anyone looking for the illusion of healthier, fuller hair. She said,
“It creates volume and shape while removing damage from every level.”
As for who the butterfly haircut looks best on, stylist recommended it for those with naturally thick or dense hair as well as those with wavy, curly, or afro-textured hair types.
Celebs who have been seen rocking the butterfly cut include TikTokers Addison Rae and Matilda Djerf, as well as actress Sydney Sweeney and model Kaia Gerber.
3. The Bixie

If the classic bob and the pixie cut started dating, their fan name would ~definitely~ be the bixie.
And that’s pretty much what the bixie cut is: a combo of the two classic styles.
In an interview with Byrdie, hairstylist Jenna Spino explained,
“The bixie is a combination of the pixie and the bob haircut. Blending the two cuts gives the fullness of a short pixie while keeping the length and versatility of a bob.”
Needless to say, there are plenty of variations on the bixie that can work for your particular taste. And that’s part of what’s so great about the style, it’s versatile enough to work for anyone while still painting that cool, edgy but feminine vibe.
Of course, you have to be willing to go short, which might be a bit of a shock for anyone who has a history of long hairstyles.
The Bixie works with any and all hair types and textures, just make sure you bring a pic to the hair salon so you and your stylist can be on the same page about what you’re exactly looking for.
Celebs who rocked the original bixie back in the 90s include Winona Ryder, Meg Ryan, Drew Barrymore, and so many more.
As for current stars who are digging the 2022 version of the bixie, actress Rowan Blanchard is often credited with reviving the hairstyle a few years ago. Others who have followed in her footsteps include Florence Pugh, Sarah Hyland, and Emma Corrin.
4. The Botticelli Bob

Who says bobs are only for those with straight hair?
This summer, celebs and TikTokers alike are embracing Botticelli waves combined with the shortness of a bob.
The beauty of the Botticelli bob is that it’s meant to be a low-maintenance look that allows you to ditch the hot tools.
If you already have curly, wavy, or afro-textured hair, the Botticelli bob can help you embrace your natural hair texture.
If you have straight hair, stylists recommend you simply braid your hair before bed so you can wake up with those signature Botticelli locks the next morning.
Considering long Botticelli waves were spotted on the red carpet earlier this year, it’s only natural that people would embrace a shorter version in the summer.
Hairstylist Tom Smith told Popsugar,
“At the beginning of the year, we saw the trend of long, unstructured Botticelli wavy hair on celebrities like Kaia Gerber and Sophie Turner. This summer as weather warms, it only makes sense that we will begin to see this trend do well as it transforms into shorter hair.”
Celebrities who have sported the look include Laura Harrier, Bella Hadid, and Julianne Hough.
5. Surfer Curtains

Last but definitely not least, surfer curtains.
The surfer curtain cut is essentially 90s heartthrob hair but with beach waves (think: Ryder Strong as Shawn Hunter in Boy Meets World, Erik von Detten in Brink! and The Princess Diaries, and basically everyone else you had a crush on as a 90s kid).
The surfer curtain look is supposed to be a lower-maintenance version of the hairstyle that brings that “I just woke up like this” vibe.
Celebrity hairstylist Kylee Heath explained to Popsugar,
“The surfer-curtains trend is a cut that is generally parted in the center, or slightly off center, and worn with a beachy texture. The cut and style leave some length in the front that is worn almost like a curtain bang that can be tossed left to right. This look is also great when it is a little tousled with some volume and texture.”
Gen X celebs who have embraced the cut include Cole Sprouse, Timothee Chalamet, and Charles Melton.
While most of the wearers of the haircut have typically been male-identifying, the cut is actually super gender-neutral and would look great on folks of all gender identities.
